DeepSeek

DeepSeek is a big deal because the AI luminaries you've heard from are (were) counting on AI requiring giant warehouses of computers to build and run the models. This provides a large barrier to entry (or moat, in tec guy speak). The moat would mean they have no competition and can charge large subscription fees.

DeepSeek was made in less time and with much less money than the AIs you've heard about. And it can run locally. This means lots of companies could compete, and because it runs locally, no subscription fees (or at least much lower ones)

The time and money could be propaganda, but the running locally has been tested.
